Saturday’s high winds caused thousands of power outages and took down power lines across the state.
In Vernon police had to shut down Washington Street near Brookview Drive after high winds knocked down a tree onto power lines.
According to police, the tension on the lines pulled a telephone pole down at the intersection of Brookview Drive and Washington Street and also made power lines fall onto the nearby intersection of Washington and Church Streets.
Police advice residents and motorists to avoid the area while CL&P makes repairs and restores power to the area.
The road is expected to be reopened Sunday morning.
In Meriden high winds ripped some roofing material off of a multi-family home on Crown Street. The chimney also came crashing down forcing several people to evacuate the home.
CL&P has opened its Emergency Operations Center in Berlin due to the amount of outages in the state.
Local
The company’s Manger of Emergency Management Al Roy states that they have restored power to about 8,100 customers today.
During the storm CL&P encourages customers to:
· Keep a radio or TV tuned to local broadcast stations for the latest weather conditions.
· Report your power outage by calling CL&P at 800-286-2000, or 860-947-2000 in the Hartford/Meriden area. Our automated phone system rapidly processes your report and helps us speed restoration efforts. It also provides restoration estimates as soon as they're available.
· If you see wires down, stay away and report them by calling 9-1-1. Assume any downed, hanging or burning power lines are live and stay away from them. If a power line falls on your vehicle while you're inside, stay there. Don't touch anything outside the vehicle and wait for emergency crews.
