Services for Fallen Shelton Officer Planned for Next Week

Services for fallen Shelton police Sgt. Orville Smith will be held next week.

Sgt. Smith was working a private duty job in Shelton on the night of July 3 when a driver drove into the shoulder of the road and struck him, police said.

Smith, a 39-year veteran of the Shelton Police Department, died Wednesday morning.

Viewing hours will be held on Monday, July 12 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at Shelton High School, 120 Meadow St. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. at Shelton High School.

Joel Hurliman, chief of the Shelton police department, said on Thursday that Smith’s family has established a memorial fund to honor his memory.

Donations to the “Sgt. Smith Memorial Special Account” will be used to purchase police equipment for the department.

Checks should be made out to the “Sgt. Smith Memorial Special Account” and mailed to the Shelton Police Department, 85 Wheeler St., Shelton, CT 06484.

Bruce Knapik, 63, of Bridgeport, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Police said additional charges are possible. He will be arraigned on July 16 in Derby Superior Court.
