A 68-year-old woman is in critical condition and an 88-year-old man is in serious condition after fire broke out at their Waterbury home early Wednesday morning.
Fire officials said they responded to 38 Mitchell Ave. at 12:42 a.m. and there was fire on the second floor and heavy smoke on the second and third floors.
As firefighters were entering the house, Waterbury police were helping two victims down the stairs and EMS crews evaluated the patients once they got outside.
Fire officials said a 68-year-old woman was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and transferred to Bridgeport Burn Center, where she is listed as being in critical condition.
An 88-year-old man was transported to Waterbury Hospital and transferred to Bridgeport Burn Center, where he is listed as being in serious condition.
A 63-year-old woman was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and has been released.
A Waterbury police officer was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and has been released.

Leonard Recchia said his parents live in the home and he rushed there this morning to find they had been rushed to the hospital.
They live on the second floor and his aunt, who lives on the third floor, was also hurt, he said.
“My parents, my mother is elderly. She really, she can't walk well. My father is 90. My aunt is probably in her 60s. This is all they have," Recchia said.
Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
The three-story home was built in the late 1800s and has a balloon wood frame.
