The body of a Connecticut student who went missing while swimming in South Africa has been found, according to officials at George Washington University.
Nicholas Upton, 19, a junior at George Washington University and a graduate of Joel Barlow High School in Redding, disappeared into the surf while swimming on a study abroad trip the night of Aug. 30, university officials said.
Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski said in an email Upton's body was found Friday. Upton's death was also reported on a GoFundMe page that was raising money for his parents to go to South Africa and search for their son.
According to the fundraising page, Upton's family will fly his body home to Connecticut.
The university said earlier this week that Upton had been studying in South Africa and was traveling during a break from classes.
Upton was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and the university's rowing team.
