The fire marshal is investigating what caused an explosion and fire at an abandoned building in Vernon on Sunday night.
Officials said the fire at 91 West St. started with an explosion and mutual aid was called in because of the heat and humidity.
The building is long, narrow and mazelike and firefighters said the design of the building made the fight a little challenging.
Most of the damage is in the middle of the building, where officials believe the fire started.
Firefighters also had trouble with a hydrant, but were able to switch to a different hydrant and put the fire out.
Investigators will need a warrant before getting into the building because it’s not clear who owns it.
The fire marshal will investigate the cause.
