Firefighters spent hours battling a blaze that destroyed a home in Westbrook Friday night.
Fire officials said crews responded to a fire 242 Toby Hill Road around 4:55 p.m. after it was reported by the alarm company and a passerby who saw the flames.
By the time firefighters arrived, the home was already engulfed in flame.
"At a structure this big and as much involvement as we had, it’s basically surround it and drown it. Nobody was gonna go inside," explained Westbrook Fire Chief Mike Jenkins.
Video and pictures obtained by NBC Connecticut showed the massive fireball that enveloped the house when firefighters arrived.
One man authorities say may have been the home’s caretaker was inside and got out safely as firefighters arrived at the scene. No injuries have been reported.
Local
Westbrook called in mutual aid and tanker trucks from multiple departments responded because there are no hydrants in the area. Jenkins estimates there were as many as 60 firefighters and 15 tanker trucks on scene trying to save the home.
The home is a total loss.
The state and local fire marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.
