An explosion and fire tore through a home in OId Saybrook Friday.
Firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze at 2 Pheasant Hill Road 11:53 a.m.
At least 9 tankers from several towns carted water to the scene, which is at the corner of Ingham Hill Road. Ingham Hill Road was closed for several hours, fire officials said.
Witnesses told investigators they heard what sounded like fireworks and then saw the flames. No one was home at the time of the fire. The homeowner returned from Stop & Shop moments after firefighters arrived.
One firefighter was taken to a medical clinic after stepping on a hornets nest, according to J.T. Dunn, Old Saybrook's Fire Chief.
