Multiple departments responded to a fire at an industrial garage on Cronk Road in Plainville Saturday.
The blaze at 15 Cronk Road was first reported at 4:13 p.m.
Firefighters dealt with a double punch of single-digits temperatures and a gusty wind that made it feel like about ten degrees below zero.
“The wind didn’t help us at all. It was working against us,” said Chief Kevin Toner of the Plainville Fire Department. “It blew the fire from end to end.”
Dozens of firefighters responded from Plainville as well as surrounding towns including Farmington, Bristol and Southington. More than one hundred people tackled the inferno and the challenging conditions.
“The hose lines are freezing up, the guys have to get changed out,” said Toner.
After the flames were doused, crews checked out the icy aftermath, including several cars that were glazed over. The fire chief said there was severe damage to the 11 bay garage, which is rented by different people to store various items.

One firefighter slipped and fell but was expected to be okay. The fire marshall’s office has launched an investigation into what caused the blaze.
Chief Toner said there were five people inside the garage when the fire first started but they all made it out of the building safely.
