The body of a firefighter from New Rochelle, New York who had been missing since his boat capsized early Monday morning has been found.
The body of Keith Morris, 30, was found 58 feet away from the break wall his boat hit in the waters of the Long island Sound near Shippan Point, according to the Coast Guard.
The boat capsized around midnight and rescuers said late Monday morning that it was not likely Morris will be found alive.
"Due to the amount of time that has lapsed, it’s doubtful he will be found." Sgt. Peter Wolff, of Stamford police department, said on Monday morning.
Five people from New Rochelle, New York, including Morris' brother, were on-board the 26-foot single-engine boat when it struck a break wall and capsized, according to Stamford Police.
"They missed the opening of the break wall and traveled 50 to 100 feet east and came in contact with the break wall." Wolff said. "The break wall is a massive stone structure to guard the harbor against storms. Definitely an immovable object and much bigger than the boat they were in.”
People on shore heard the accident and called 911 for help.
Local
When rescuers arrived, two people were hanging onto the hull and two were trapped underwater in an air pocket, knocking on the hull, police said.
They were in the water, in the dark for about 45 minutes.
None of them were wearing life jackets, according to police.
Emergency crews from Stamford, the Coast Guard and several surrounding towns responded and were able to rescue four people from the water.
State police brought in sonar equipment to search the break wall and surrounding waters.
Investigators will inspect the boat to see if something mechanical contributed to the crash.
