UConn Hockey Team Checking Homophobia

Team members created a video to as part of the "You Can Play" project.

In the UConn men's hockey locker room, several players traded their skates for a role in a "You Can Play" video. The public service announcement is for the You Can Play Project, which is dedicated to fighting homophobia in sports.

Garrett Bartus is a senior goalie for UConn who says in the PSA, "UConn Hockey is proud to stand with the You Can Play Project to end homophobia in sports."

Bartus said everyone is welcome to play, whether they're gay or straight.

"It shows people in the locker room getting behind the idea and supporting it and supporting the people who are, so it really helps getting the word out," Bartus said.

Several of the team's captains approached head coach Bruce Marshall about creating the video.

"Our team really jumped on it," Marshall said, "They came to me about it and I said 'You need to be behind it, you can't just do it because it sounds good today. It has to be something you want to really support.'"

While the UConn team is one of the first collegiate teams in the country to participate in the project, several NHL teams and players have created other videos. One of the videos aired during an NHL game in March.

The videos from UConn can be seen here and here.
