Whale Tail Used as Public Toilet: Report

Officials fear the water is not safe.

The Whale Tail water feature in New London’s Parade Plaza was supposed to be a place to children to play and cool off on warm days. It was not supposed to be a public toilet or shower.

But that’s what it has became, the Day of New London reports, so the water was turned off over the weekend.

"People are using the tail as a latrine,'' Evelyn Louziotis, of New London, told the Day. "It's an $11 million bathroom.”

Police and firefighters have had to respond to reports of people urinating in the fountain, defecating, showering and using it to rinse off blood from injuries, City Councilor Michael Buscetto III said.

"If we are going to encourage children to run through the water, we have know the water is safe,'' Bill Morse, a member of the school board, told the Day.
