The Hartford Yard Goats baseball team enlisted fans to choose their mascot and they have chosen two –Chompers and Chew Chew.
The Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Colorado Rockies urged fans to visit the Yard Goats website to see a picture of the new mascot and submit name suggestions through July. In all, the team received more than 4,000 submissions.
On Friday, the names were revealed during a news conference.
Chompers is a male green goat character with blue horns, flared nostrils and sparkling white chompers and full “Goat-ee.” He wears a plaid shirt and blue shoes.
Chew Chew is a female blue goat character with green horns. Her mouth is outlined with pink lip stick and she is wearing a white dress with green and blue polka dots, white ruffled bloomers, green shoes and a bow.
Lauren Konefal, 10, of Middlefield, chose Chompers, and Jeffrey Boyle, 10, of Farmington, chose Chew Chew. Both of them won the “Name the Mascot” contest, including a pair of Hartford Yard Goats season tickets for the inaugural season.
“We thought with all the excitement that the Yard Goats has generated that Hartford deserved not on(e) but two primary mascots,” team General Manager Tim Restall said in a statement. “Chompers and Chew Chew are fun and appeal to all ages and will be our community ambassadors all year long.”
The Yard Goats will begin playing at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in downtown Hartford on April 7.
