Tuesday's big stock stories: What's likely to move the market in the next trading session

Here's what CNBC TV's producers were watching on Monday and what's on the radar for Tuesday's session.

Dow closes at all-time high

  • The index is now up 9.4% so far this year.
  • The Dow is up 6.56% since its close on Aug. 5, the day the market sold off recently.
  • August leaders in the Dow include: Nike, up 12.6%; Walmart, up 11%; and McDonald's, up 9%.
  • At the bottom: Intel, down 35%; Boeing, down 9%; and Chevron, down 7.5%.

SpaceX readies for Polaris Dawn mission

  • CNBC TV's Morgan Brennan will report on the Polaris Dawn mission, which is expected to launch Tuesday, in SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.
  • While SpaceX is a privately held company, there are ways for retail investors to get involved.
  • Cathy Wood's ARK Venture Fund (ARKVX) is 11.5% SpaceX. The fund is 6.5% from its December high and flat in the last week, month and three-month periods.
  • Ron Baron's Baron Focused Growth Fund (BFGIX) is 10% SpaceX. It is just off the July high. It is pretty much flat in August, but up 8% in three months.

S&P Case-Shiller on tap

Nordstrom reports Tuesday afternoon

  • The department store is flat since last reporting three months ago.
  • The stock is 9.8% from the July 17th high.
  • Another department store, Dillard's is down 21% in three months.
  • Macy's is down 22% in three months.
  • Kohl's is down 25% in three months.

Nvidia… 48 hours away

  • Nvidia releases numbers after the bell Wednesday.
  • The stock is 10% from the June 20th high.
  • It is up 8% in August and 155% in a year.

XPeng vs. Tesla

  • We're expecting to hear details from Chinese carmaker XPeng about a new car they hope will compete with Tesla's Model 3.
  • XPeng is down 11.8% in a month. The stock is 62% from its September high.
  • Tesla is down 3% in a month, the stock is 23.5% from its 52-week high, which was also in September.
  • CNBC TV's Eunice Yoon will have the story from China.

Sectornomics

  • Dominic Chu focuses on industrials tomorrow on CNBC TV.
  • The S&P Industrials sector is up 13% in 2024.
  • That ranks 8th out of the 11 S&P sectors.
  • In the last 12 months, industrials are up 21%.
  • Howmet is the leader in the sector this year, up nearly 79%.
  • GE Aerospace is up 68% this year.
  • 3M is up 44% in 2024.
  • GE Vernova, Boeing and American Airlines are the sector's biggest laggards.
