On Wednesday, numbers 1 and 2 will battle in a rematch of last years Final Four semifinal.
It’s a battle of the top-two women’s basketball programs in the country.
No, we’re not talking UConn and Tennessee. This is a new rivalry for a new era: UConn against Stanford.
UConn and Geno Auriemma will welcome in the Stanford Cardinal to the XL Center Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. nationally televised match-up.
This will be the tenth meeting between these two schools and the fourth in the last three years. UConn brings a 48-game winning streak into the game and guess who the last team the Huskies lost too? Yep, you guessed it, Stanford.
UConn has quite a history of these games. This is the 13th game that the Huskies have been involved in that pitted #1 vs. #2 with UConn winning 10 of them. The Huskies are 7-1 in these games as the best team in the country.
This is the type of game where Geno’s girls simply rise up, out-talent and out-work their opponent. This is no lay-up though. This Stanford team wants to make a statement. They want to come onto UConns' home floor and put an end to this 48-game winning streak while seeking a bit of revenge for last year’s semifinal loss.
Regardless of the outcome, this no doubt will cause major waves throughout women’s basketball. If UConn wins, many will wonder if anyone can beat this team. If Stanford prevails, some will ponder if we have seen a shift of power from Storrs to Palo Alto.
Either way this has all the makings of a classic hoops battle. One that the Huskies hope is a nice early Christmas present for themselves and their fans.
