A 2-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with injuries after being shot in Waterbury Tuesday afternoon.

NBC Connecticut spoke with a mother that was home nearby at the time.

“The kids had just gotten off the bus. We were inside making lunch. I heard some screaming but I actually thought it was kids having fun. It was the last day of school," the woman said.

The shooting took place at 99 Pinecrest Dr., according to police. Officials are actively investigating the shooting.

“Really scary that something like that could happen in the next front yard and you don’t know how serious it is. So it wasn’t until I saw all the police officers come up and pull their guns, and a long gun, everything was out and I told my kids to hide. And a police officer came to my front door and said shut your door and go hide behind concrete," the mother said.

While a lot of families live in the neighborhood, some have had concerns about what has been going on in the area recently and have thought about moving.

“There are times I know there’s going to be a drug deal going on outside my door at two o’clock in the morning. And I think to myself if that goes sour I need to tuck and roll behind my bed right now," the woman said.

People at the home where the shooting took place declined to talk.
