Students at Capital Prep Welcomed Back to the Start of Another School Year

Monday was the first day back to school for students at Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford. Teachers, administrators, community leaders and the Yard Goat’s own Chompers welcomed the students back.

Out of the 640 Pre-K through 12 students, they welcomed 177 new families.

“I feel super blessed. This is the most amazing position a person can be in, leading the work, greeting the families, keeping that promise to families that we are going to make sure your kids are college ready and have every opportunity available to them,” said Principal Kitsia Hughey Ferguson.

Administrators are aware that students are returning to school much earlier than their peers in other districts. That’s why the first five weeks of school they have a program called “classroom without walls.” During the five weeks, 11th and 12th graders will spend the time interning, while the lower levels get out of the classroom regularly and take trips to places like the Mark Twain House and Harriet Beecher Stowe Center.

“We have kids participating with the museums around the area, down at Riverfront. So they’re doing a lot of the work trying to understand the community they live in and the impact they can make on the community,” said Hughey Ferguson.

Principal Hughey Ferguson says their year-round program helps maintain structure and ultimately prepares every student for college.
