The city of New Britain officially dedicated its new “Beehive Bridge” Thursday.
The eye-catching design is the new connector over Route 32.
“This is an incredible day for the city of New Britain. I mean this has been five years in the making to take the Beehive Bridge and bring it to reality,” said Mayor Erin Stewart (R).
Stewart pulled out the napkin on which years ago she sketched out her vision. The bridge feature bees and a beehive, inspired by the city’s seal.
“This is an iconic, iconic project. There’s nothing like it of its kind. And I really hope when people drive by it they that’s the city of New Britain and I want to go there,” she said.
When people travel around the city, the hope is the $7.4 million project makes it easier, including for bikers and walkers.
“It’s great. And the ribbon of white lights over the arches of the beehive they illuminate the whole beehive,” said resident Sandy Reigal.

Thursday they lit up this main connection from downtown to the city’s Little Poland neighborhood, as well as a shopping area.
“I just think it’s really cool. It dresses up the place. It’s not average by any means,” commented Lenore Bourque.
Mixing art and function the bridge is the fifth part of the street plan to calm traffic and make the city more accessible, particular for those not in cars.
A grant and state funding helped pay for the project.
