A Bridgeport man is accused of stabbing his teenage niece to death at an apartment on Fairfield Avenue Monday night.
Police said 31-year-old Richard Segabiro called 911 around 10 p.m. and said he had killed his 16-year-old daughter.
Police responded to his apartment at 2292 Fairfield Ave. and found Segabiro covered in blood and his niece Francine Nyanzaninka, who he raised as his daughter, dead in the bathtub. She had multiple stab wounds, police said.
Segabiro was arrested and confessed to the stabbing, according to police.
Police said that Segabiro’s wife and three other young children were in the home at the time of the stabbing but were not hurt.
Officials said police had never been called to the house before.
Filemon Herrera, who lives in the building, told NBC Connecticut he was shocked to see police surround the building, Moments before, he'd heard yelling from Segabiro's apartment, but thought it was just the children arguing.
"I don’t know what to say to my son right now. He’s asking what happened last night, what happened. And I don’t know. And my wife said we have to explain to him," Herrara said.
"It's so sad, so sad," he added.
Segabiro was charged with murder, He was initially held on a $1 million bond. His public defender asked the judge to lower the bond because Segabiro has cooperated with police, but the judge raised the amount of the bond to $1.5 million.
