The body of a man was recovered from the the Houstaonic River in New Milford.
New Milford's fire chief said the family of the victim called the department around 2:38 p.m. on Tuesday. The family said the man, who is not a strong swimmer, was in distress after he went under water and did not come back up, according to the fire chief.
The search took place on the river near West Street and the body of a man was recovered around 5:31 p.m.
Police have identified the man as Xavier Puin, 34, of Brooklyn, New York.
Four different emergency boats and a Sikorsky helicopter searched the water for heat signals.
