Firefighters have contained a brush fire that broke out in a residential area of North Haven, and officials continue to urge caution due to dry weather conditions.

The fire department said they responded to the area of 268 Upper State St., near Sinoway Pond on Friday night. They're actively working to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

Firefighters will remain at the scene overnight due to weather conditions.

Parts of Upper State Street and Hartford Turnpike remain closed at this time.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Forestry Division responded to the scene and will check on the area throughout the day Saturday.

Deputy Fire Chief Scott Bisson said the fire consumed about three acres and while homes surround the wooded area, none had to be evacuated.

“We will be here overnight to make sure it doesn’t flare up and if it does, we’ll have additional resources coming in," Bisson said.

The fire broke out at around 4:45 p.m. and was contained by 7 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Some people living in the area couldn't believe it was happening so close to home.

"My dog reacted, to the sirens, and then you see the sirens basically stop right outside your house," Doris Gaanderse, of North Haven, said. "I walked outside and across the street was just on fire."

Gaanderse couldn't believe after weeks of hearing about brush fires around Connecticut, one was so close to home.

"I said to a friend, 'I cannot believe this is happening' when literally this morning we were talking about it," she said.

Connecticut remains under a red flag warning and a stage 2 drought. Burn bans remain in effect on state land and in certain towns, including North Haven.

Fire officials are urging extreme caution with any open flame or spark as extreme fire conditions persist.
