Part of JC Recycling on Hall Avenue in Meriden collapsed Friday morning during a two-alarm fire.
Meriden firefighters received reports at 8:30 a.m. of fire at 45 Hall Ave., an auto body supplier and repair shop, and they encountered heavy flames and smoke, which limited visibility.
Crews had to fight the fire from the outside and the second floor, which is used for auto part storage, collapsed.
Several cars were inside, but no people were, officials said.
Hall Avenue remains closed from Crown Street to Old Colony Road.
Crews from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called in to assess the site and the water runoff.
Fire officials also alerted Amtrak because there are train tracks behind the building.
