Firefighters battled a raging fire Friday that damaged a home in Niantic.
The fire was at a home at Old Black Point Road and Woodland Drive.
East Lyme Fire Marshal Richard Morris told NBC Connecticut the elderly homeowner had left the home before the fire started.
"He had told us he had put logs in his fireplace prior to leaving the house," Morris said. It's not clear what, if anything, that might have had to do with the fire starting.
Neighbors and people across the water reported the fire to the fire department.
Official said the fire was a challenge to put out because of the house's contemporary design as well as furniture and papers, Morris said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
