Several businesses and the ACES school were evacuated after a construction crew working on the Skiff Street Bridge project hit a gas line on Skiff Street in Hamden Monday morning.

The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. and the road has reopened.

Skiff Street was closed for around two miles, between Whitney and Dixwell avenues, according to the mayor’s social media sites. He said the street will not have gas service until the repairs are done.

Officials said the ACES school has been communicating with families of students.

"ACES in cooperation with Hamden Hall Country Day School, we’ve evacuated all the kids back to a rear property back on Skiff Street and they’ll be able to be picked up on the far side of the leak,” Hamden Fire Chief Gary Merwede said.

Southern Connecticut Gas Company responded and crews have been working to isolate the leak, officials said. There is no estimate on when the repairs will be done.

No injuries are reported.
