Fire Destroys Vacant House in Bridgeport

Fire destroyed a vacant house at Connecticut and Union avenues in Bridgeport this morning and spread to another, prompting evacuations.

Officials from the Bridgeport Fire Department said the evacuations were necessary because the houses are so close together.

The fire started on the second floor of one house and spread to the first and third floors, destroying the house, officials said.

When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were coming from the building. Fire also spread to an abandoned house on the corner.

Fire officials said everyone was able to get out of house and no injuries are reported.

Fire officials said freezing weather was a factor.

Assistant Fire Chief John Mazza said a hydrant froze over and had to shut it off.

The fire marshal is investigating.
