A fire at a building materials recycling center in Berlin sent a tower of smoke into the sky on Monday morning that was so high it was visible from north of Hartford.
Just before 9:45 a.m., a worker was crushing plywood inside CWPM on Christian Lane, when fire broke out beneath some heavy equipment, officials said.
It took firefighters an hour to get the blaze under control and several hours to handle hotspots.
Fire departments form several towns responded.
