A firefighter was taken to the hospital after being injured while battling a blaze in downtown Shelton.

Fire crews responded to a multi-family home at the corner of Maple Street and Howe Avenue at approximately 7 p.m.

Officials said they received several calls reporting the building on fire. Responding crews said they saw heavy fire in the back of the second and third floors.

All four Shelton fire companies responded and put out the fire, which was under control in about 45 minutes.

Derby firefighters responded to the scene and other nearby towns provided station coverage. A total of roughly 50 firefighters assisted.

People resided in the first and second floors and approximately four to six people were displaced as a result of the fire, according to crews.

Crews said a firefighter at the scene was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation of a non-life threatening injury.

Officials deemed the home uninhabitable and the Fire Marshal is investigating.

It's unclear what started the fire.
