Funeral Arrangements Set for Fallen Bristol Officers

NBC Universal, Inc.

Crisis therapy dogs and the Salvation Army mobile canteen are outside of the Bristol Police Department.

Funeral arrangements have been set for two Bristol police officers who died in the line of duty last week.

The funeral services for Lt. Dustin DeMonte and Sgt. Alex Hamzy are being held at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford on Friday, October 21 at 11 a.m.

Members of the community who want to attend the funeral services are asked to arrive before 9:30 a.m.

Members of the public who wish to attend are instructed to park in the gray or red lots. The public will enter through Gate C and D.

Bags, including purses, flowers, gifts and cameras are prohibited at the venue.

Walk-through calling hours for Officer Hamzy will be held Wednesday, Oct. 19 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Lyceum on Main Street in Terryville.

DeMonte and Hamzy were shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call on Redstone Hill Road last Wednesday.

The Bristol Police Department said DeMonte has been promoted posthumously to lieutenant and Hamzy was posthumously promoted to sergeant.

Members of the public who attend calling hours for Hamzy are asked to park at the Terryville Fairgrounds at 171 Town Hill Road, where they will be bused to and from the Lyceum Banquet Hall.

Route 6 near the banquet hall will be closed to traffic.

The mayor of Plymouth is urging people driving in town to be patient and to stay off the roads if possible.

"Tomorrow is going to be a very difficult day for many, I ask residents to be patient with the large influx of traffic we will see. Stay off the roads if at all possible and please, follow the directions below if you plan on attending the calling hours. DO NOT try to find a side road or another parking lot in town closer to downtown. Traffic is going to be very difficult to manage during this event so help law enforcement out, follow directions and be patient," the mayor posted on Facebook.

Members of the Bristol community are remembering how Sgt. Dustin DeMonte touched their lives.

State police said preliminary information appears to point to the 911 call being a deliberate act to lure law enforcement to the scene.

Members of the Bristol community Friday shared their memories of Officer Alex Hamzy.

State police said Nicholas Brutcher was outside when police arrived and shots were fired. A report from the state Office of the Inspector General says Brutcher fired more than 80 rounds at the officers.

Sgt. Hamzy was fatally wounded at the scene. Lt. DeMonte was also shot and was transported from the scene. He was later pronounced dead, according to state police.

Bristol police say Officer Alec Iurato, who was struck by gunfire, returned fire and killed Brutcher.

L. DeMonte was a 10-year veteran of the Bristol Police Department while Sgt. Hamzy was an eight-year veteran.
