GOP Appeals Bysiewicz Decision

The Connecticut Republican Party will appeal a judge's ruling that Susan Bysiewicz is qualified to run for Attorney General.

State GOP Chairman Chris Healy said party lawyers filed the appeal with the State Supreme Court Tuesday afternoon.

Superior Court Judge Michael Sheldon ruled last week that Bysiewicz's time as Secretary of the State satisfies the requirement that she be a practicing attorney in Connecticut for at least 10 years.

Healy called that decision "horrible".  He said Judge Sheldon's ruling was too broad and ignored Connecticut law as it applies to the active practice requirement.

Bysiewicz called on the Republican Party to stop what she calls "distractions" and to focus on the campaign.

"The Republican Party is trying to cast doubt over my candidacy as we prepare for the Democratic State Convention and this appeal is another desperate and deliberate attempt to keep me off the ballot," Bysiewicz said in a release Tuesday.

The State Supreme Court must now decide when and where the appeal will be heard.
