A car carrier hit a Greenwich fire engine on Interstate 95 while firefighters were responding to another crash early Thursday morning and several people, including three firefighters, were injured, according to police.
State police said the initial crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. on Interstate 95 South near exit 4 in Greenwich when the back trailer of a double tractor-trailer started to swerve on the dark, wet highway.
The truck went off the road, hit a guardrail and overturned.
Then, around 1:06 a.m., a car carrier heading toward the scene of the earlier crash hit the fire engine that was parked in the right and center travel lanes, which had been shut down for the investigation, then it hit two other vehicles, state police said.

The highway was closed for around six hours because around 130 gallons of fuel leaked from the car carrier, state police said.
Three firefighters, the driver of a Lexus the car carrier hit and the driver of the car carrier were injured and they were taken to Stamford Hospital. None of the injuries were life-threatening, state police said.
The driver of the double tractor-trailer that was involved in the initial crash suffered minor injuries and he was taken to Greenwich Hospital.

State police have charged the driver of the car carrier with failure to display plates, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, failure to maintain minimum insurance, failure to move over or slow down for an emergency vehicle and traveling too fast for conditions. They said the investigation into that crash is ongoing.
State police said the driver of the double tractor-trailer was charged with failure to maintain proper lane and traveling too fast for conditions.
