A brand new attack submarine is joining the ranks of the fleet at Groton’s Naval Submarine Base New London and among its crew are female officers, according to the U.S. Navy.
The USS Minnesota, a 377-foot-long Virginia-class attack submarine, departed from Virginia on Wednesday and arrived in Groton this past Friday, bringing the total number of submarines there to 16.
More than 130 sailors, including two female officers, will comprise the submarine’s crew. Missions will include missile attacks on targets on land and delivering special forces.
It was built by Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding.
