Theresa Cooper has a seventh grader at H.W. Porter and she said yesterday, "everyone was red faced, hot and tired."
Tammy Ekstrom, a fifth grade teacher in Columbia, borrowed a fan from home to bring in for her students. "It was very warm yesterday and it was very, very uncomfortable this morning," Ekstrom said. "I had to say to my son can I please take the fan from your bedroom because it's so hot in the classroom."
Most classrooms at H.W. Porter spent the day with the lights off. The windows stayed open in rooms with a breeze while other classrooms kept windows shut.
In New Haven the school district left it up to building principals whether or not they'd keep kids inside for recess. In Bridgeport and Windsor, classrooms got so hot Wednesday that students will be dismissed early on Thursday.
Laurel Elementary School in Bloomfield will also dismiss students early on Thursday.
"We decided it was better for us to shorten the day and get the children back home so they'd be out of the building," Columbia Superintendent Francine Coss said.
During the morning Coss and the head custodian took temperature readings in rooms across the school. With temperatures up to 84 degrees by mid morning Coss decided to close schools early.
