Man killed in drive-by shooting in Hartford

NBC Connecticut

A man has died after a drive-by shooting in Hartford late Friday night, just days after a separate drive-by shooting in the city killed a young mother and her baby.

Officers were called to the 100 block of Seymour Street around 11:40 p.m. for a ShotSpotter notification.

When police arrived, they said they found a 39-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced dead. He has been identified as Joshua Ortega.

According to investigators, the shots were fired from a passing vehicle. Officers have not said what type of vehicle the shots may have come from.

Friday's shooting in Hartford is the second deadly drive-by shooting in the Capital City this week.

On Tuesday, a 20-year-old woman and her 4-month-old son were killed in a triple shooting on Hillside Avenue and Zion Street just before 3 p.m. Authorities said the mom and baby – Jessiah Mercado and her son, Messiah Diaz, were both from Springfield, Massachusetts.

Hartford police said Saturday that 23-year-old Lance Morales was caught in Puerto Rico and has been arrested in connection to the death of Mercado and Diaz. He is facing charges including murder.
