Truck driver seriously hurt after being trapped in crash on I-395 in Norwich

Yantic Fire Engine Co. #1

A truck driver was seriously injured after a 25,000-pound metal beam they were transporting trapped them in a multi-vehicle crash on Tuesday.

A truck traveling on Interstate 395 South crashed into two cars from behind, causing one of the vehicles to crash into another, state police said.

During the collision, the metal beam being transported by the truck became loose and flew through the driver compartment. The impact trapped the truck driver, who was ultimately taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to troopers.

Two other drivers involved in the crash were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The CT Department of Transportation said the highway was closed between exits 18 and 14 for several hours before reopening around 8 p.m.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) responded to the scene for a fuel spill.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Timothy Wengloski at 860-848-6500.
