A man has serious injuries after getting stuck under his car following a crash on Interstate 95 South in Milford on Wednesday.

Milford fire officials said they responded to I-95 South in the area of exit 39 after hearing that a person was stuck underneath their car.

Crews determined that a car had gone off the highway and halfway down a steep embankment, crashing into a tree midair. As a result, the driver was pinned against the tree with part of his body stuck underneath the dash, according to firefighters.

Fire officials said state police were the first to make contact with the driver, putting their lives on the line to begin life-saving measures. They helped rescue the man, who was unconscious but still breathing.

The CT Department of Transportation said the highway was closed between exits 40 and 39B, and the exit 40 on ramp was also closed.

The crash was reported shortly after 3 p.m. and the highway reopened hours later.

Fire officials said the rescue operation involved extensive knowledge and several resources, including the Yale Sharps team as well as the West Shore Fire Department and tow companies.

The investigation remains ongoing. No additional information was immediately available.
