Fire destroyed a barn on a family farm in North Branford Wednesday morning.
North Branford fire officials said they were called to the Augur family farm on Mill Road near Forest Road around 5:45 a.m. Mutual aid responded with tanker trucks to assist.
Freezing temperatures and strong winds made fighting the fire difficult, with water freezing and causing icy conditions.
"We actually encouraged our personnel to use extreme caution, especially since we’ve got a lot of water on the ground here naturally. We’ve just got to move slowly," explained North Branford Fire Chief Bill Seward.
The farm owner, Larry Augur, told NBC Connecticut the barn was full of farming equipment, snowmobiles, and hay, which was severely damaged. He said he's lost several thousand dollars-worth of equipment, but he was glad the family home were unaffected.
There were concerns that the fire could spread to another barn nearby that houses the family’s cattle, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze and the animals were unharmed.
No injuries were reported.
