A Montville power plant is shutting and will be demolished, eliminating more than $1 million in tax revenue and leaving about 40 workers without jobs, Montville's mayor said.
Mayor Ronald McDaniel said on Monday that AES Thames will close after 22 years in operation, according to The Day of New London and Norwich Bulletin. McDaniel called it devastating for the town.
The coal-fired plant was sold last week to a subsidiary of BTU Solutions, a company that demolishes power plants.
AES Thames, which previously was owned by the Arlington, Va.-based AES Corp., filed for bankruptcy in February.
McDaniel said decommissioning the plant, which sold electricity to Connecticut Light & Power, is expected to be completed within 16 months.
