NBC Universal, Inc.

One person has died after an apartment fire in New Britain early Wednesday morning and a firefighter is being treated for an injury.

Firefighters were called the apartment building on Spring Street shortly before 2 a.m.

According to fire officials, there was a fire in the hallway area of the sixth floor and the building was occupied at the time of the fire.

When crews arrived, they said they saw an apartment on the sixth floor fully involved in fire and they saw multiple people hanging from the windows of the building.

“At that point we needed more manpower because, being such a big building, with evacuations and manpower to put a standpipe operation into the building, so I made it a third alarm,” Deputy Chief Paul Walsh, of the New Britain Fire Department, said.

Multiple people were rescued from an apartment fire in New Britain early Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.

Approximately 26 people were evacuated from the top two floors of the apartment. At least one person has died as a result of the fire, officials said. It's unclear if anyone else in the building was injured.

One firefighter is also being treated for an injury that officials said is not serious.

There is heavy smoke damage in an apartment on the sixth floor and several people from the fifth and sixth floors are displaced, authorities added.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross is helping to find temporary housing for the people who were displaced.

Mutual aid was called in from Hartford, West Hartford and Bristol to help with the fire.
