A Naugatuck building that includes residences and a restaurant is closed after a resident opened a piece of mail that had white powder inside on Thursday night.
A resident of the 2nd floor of 123 Cherry St. called police at 7:59 p.m. after opening the letter with an unknown substance, Naugatuck police said.
The Naugatuck police and fire departments responded and contacted the Department of Environmental Protection, which in turn notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The Department of Public Health laboratory will analyze the unknown substance and it could take up to 48 hours for results.
As a precaution, the building, including the food establishment on the first floor, has been closed to occupants pending the results.
Mario’s Pizza is listed as being at 123 Cherry St. and there was no answer when NBC Connecticut called the restaurant.
Police said there is no indication that this is a criminal matter and they hope to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.
