Bomb threat at New Haven Pride Center causes evacuations and road closures

NBC Connecticut

Police are investigating after a bomb threat was called into the Pride Center in New Haven Saturday afternoon, resulting in evacuations and several road closures.

The police department said they responded to Orange Street for the reported threat.

In a statement, the New Haven Pride Center said they faced a "distressing situation" when they received a bomb threat via email.

A New Haven city official said DaVita Dialysis Center, situated above the Pride Center, had to be evacuated and patients were placed in ambulances. Many streets downtown were closed and some nearby buildings were also evacuated, according to a city official.

Others were asked to remain indoors as the police department's hazardous device team and dogs searched the area. It has since been deemed safe.

"The staff and board of the center share our heartfelt gratitude for the swift action of New Haven’s first responders. We want to assure everyone that both the New Haven Pride Center and the staff are safe, as are the rest of our neighbors on Orange Street," the center said on Facebook.

"While it is disheartening to witness such acts of hatred, it serves as a stark reminder that LGBTQ+ individuals across the country still face adversity and discrimination every day. However, let this be a testament to our resilience and strength. We refuse to be consumed by fear; instead, we choose to stand taller, united in our purpose," the center said.

The incident is under investigation.
