There will be extra police presence at all six public schools in North Haven because of the creepy clown craze on social media.
The trend has been growing since August, when there were sightings in South Carolina of clowns creeping in the woods and children reported the clowns showed them money and tried to lure them into the woods.
The reports have spread and North Haven is the latest school district to add police patrols after Naugatuck.
North Haven Supt. Robert Cronin said he called parents last night to let parents know about the extra police presence.
This has consumed his whole day, he said on Tuesday, and called it an example of how social media can be disruptive.
In New Haven, the school district is prohibiting clown costumes during Halloween in response to several menacing social media posts and Cronin said he is considering the same in North Haven, but has not yet decided on that.
