Republican Peter Nystrom has been elected mayor of Norwich for a second time following a four year gap after he lost re-election in 2013.
"Today is very satisfying," Nystrom said after polls closed, according to the Norwich Bulletin. "We still have the majority, and I think that’s a blessing for the taxpayers in particular. The four of us that are going to be on the council are going to keep moving the city forward. It’s going to be more affordable, and cost less to live here."
Nystrom, 60, works for the United Parcel Service as a delivery truck driver but said he plans to retire in May 2019, the Bulletin reported. He is also the City Council's president pro tempore.
He served as mayor of Norwich from 2009 to 2013 before losing a re-election bid to Democrat Deb Hinchey.
Hinchey said earlier this year that she was not seeking re-election.
