Tanker truck crash causes hazmat situation on I-395 in Plainfield

Plainfield Fire Co. #1

An overturned tractor-trailer venting a vapor cloud closed both sides of Interstate 395 in Plainfield Thursday morning.

It happened around 1:30 a.m., according to state police.

The northbound and southbound lanes were closed between Exit 24 in Griswold and Exit 28 in Plainfield, according to Plainfield Fire Co. #1.

The tanker truck was carrying liquid nitrogen and was leaking, creating a vapor cloud in the area.

Liquid nitrogen is an inert gas that is not flammable and is non-poisonous, according to fire officials.

Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Hazardous materials experts were at the scene to help deal with the venting gas, they said.

State police said a car traveling on I-395 struck the center median guardrail and came to a stop on the highway.

The driver fled the scene, but was later found and charged with interfering with police, failure to maintain lane, evading and more, according to police.

The tractor-trailer swerved to try to avoid hitting the abandoned car, but the truck ended up rolling over and blocking traffic, according to troopers.

The highway reopened shortly before 11 a.m.
