NBC Universal, Inc.

A Suffield High School student died after the dirt bike he was riding and a sedan got into a head-on crash in Suffield on Sunday, according to police.

Officers responded to Copper Hill Road at Woods Hollow Road around 5:30 p.m. Sunday after a dirt bike heading south on Copper Hill Road and a sedan going north collided head-on in the southbound lane, police said.

Authorities said the dirt bike rider died. Police identified him Monday as Carter Jones. He was a freshman at Suffield High School, police said.

“During this time of grief, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family and friends," Suffield High School Principal Anthony Hibbert said in a letter to families.

Police are asking drivers of any type of vehicle to be careful and aware at all times.

“Our hearts and support go out to all those involved and affected by the tragic loss. We are working with our Board of Education and Superintendent to ensure our students and faculty our supported by the community in this time of loss, and that the necessary resources are being directed there as needed," First Selectman Colin Moll said.

A parent told NBC Connecticut that a lot of teens in the area have quads and ATVs, and a lot of them ride together.

"I feel for their whole family, his parents, I can't imagine," Cara Thorpe, of Suffield, said.

The crash is under investigation.
