There is an online petition calling for Long Island Sound to be renamed the Connecticut Sound. People along the shoreline had differing opinions about it.

There is an online petition calling for Long Island Sound to be renamed.

"America has long ignored the greatness of CONNECTICUT! Such as being the pizza capital of the WORLD!!!," the change.org petition begins.

The author of the petition wants the body of water to be renamed the "Gulf of Connecticut."

The author even took a shot at the place that has given the world Billy Joel, Jerry Seinfeld, and others.

"Long Island isn't even that long, I've seen way bigger, and Connecticut is just such a beautiful state."

The petition appeared days after President Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

Gov. Ned Lamont had his own tongue-in-cheek thoughts when he was asked about changing the name earlier this week.

"I think so, why not? I mean I got a president who's naming things anytime he wants to," Lamont said. "I think Long Island Sound is a little dated. I think Connecticut Sound has got a real ring to it."

The governor even posted about it on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday.

The petition had 282 signatures as of Thursday morning.

Even as a joke, changing the name would be a no brainer for some.

"It's mostly Connecticut on the coast,” Ed Munch, of Westbrook, said.

"I think it's probably a good idea,” Bill, of Wilton, said.

Although some say if it isn’t broke, don't fix it.

"Keep it Long Island,” Brent Camhi, of Wallingford, said.

Some go as far to say, this is a greedy request from the Nutmeg State.

"They got a river, so do they need the sound, too?” Mikko Aarino, of New Jersey, said.

Speaking of the Connecticut River, Vermont Republican Governor Phil Scott is getting in on the jokes, suggesting the 'Connecticut River' be renamed the 'Vermont River.'

"I don't think it needs to happen,” Aarnio said.

"We're the pizza capitol of the world on 195 and the college basketball capitol of the world,” Bill, of Wilton, said.

Some say taking over the sound would just be another feather in our cap.

"I’m sure New York has something to say about that,” Bill said.

"It’s ridiculous,” Jeanne, a Long Islander who now lives in Wilton, said.

The family is divided. Jeanne is a native Long Islander who said she can't get behind the movement, no matter where she lives now.

"I was born and raised in long island and it is the long island sound and always will be,” Jeanne said.

We reached out to Senators Murphy and Blumenthal to see if this initiative had any legs, but we haven't heard back. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has not replied to Lamont's tweet.
