Police Arrest Suspect in Shooting That Killed 26-Year-Old Woman in New Haven

A 26-year-old woman died after a shooting on Saltonstall Avenue in New Haven early Sunday morning and police have charged a man with murder.

Police said a man called dispatchers at 1:11 a.m. and said he just shot someone on Saltonstall Avenue. Dispatchers got a description of the suspect and alerted police.

Officers responded and found a male with his hands raised who fit the description of the shooter.

Police identified the man as 30-year-old Leon Guerrero.

He told officers he had placed his gun in his vehicle and officers detained him, police said.

The victim, 26-year-old Tayna Rodriguez, of New Haven, was in the roadway next to a Honda Civic. 

She was immediately brought to Yale-New Haven Hospital, but died soon after, police said.

Police said Guerrero and two other males were in a fight on Saltonstall Avenue and Rodriguez was struck by gunfire when she got out of her vehicle and approached the group that was involved in the altercation, police said.

Guerrero was charged with murder and held on a $2 million bond.
