Police capture suspect who escaped custody in New Haven

State police recaptured a person who escaped custody in New Haven on Wednesday morning.

The suspect, 43-year-old David Tate, of New Haven, was detained by New Haven police Wednesday on an outstanding warrant connected to him leaving a halfway house where he was mandated to stay by court order, according to state police.

Tate was turned over to state police, who transported him to New Haven Correctional on Whalley Avenue. While parked in the sally port entrance, Tate, who was in handcuffs, was able to unbuckle his seatbelt and open the door of the cruiser just after 11 a.m., police said. He took off on foot as a trooper chased him.

The trooper lost sight of Tate.

State police and New Haven police began searching for Tate and nearby schools were put into lockdown as a precaution.

They found Tate and took him into custody on Dixwell Avenue around 11:35 a.m.

He is charged with first-degree escape, interfering with an officer, and failure to comply with fingerprint requirements.
