Student Drowns in High School Pool

A teacher tried to save the student.

A student is dead after an incident during a physical education class at the East Hartford High School pool on Wednesday.

Emergency crews responded to the school for a report of possible drowning around 12:30 p.m..

Students saw the student at the bottom of the pool, sources said, and the teacher jumped in and performed CPR.

"Today there was a tragic event at East Hartford High School where a student drowned," Supt. of Schools Mark Zito said in a news release. "Student safety is of paramount concern and the school district will continue to work with the East Hartford Police Department to investigate this incident."

Principal Matthew Ryan sent a letter home to parents saying a student had an accident at the school.

"The student was given assistance at the school and transported to the hospital. EHHS personnel responded and followed trained safety procedures," Ryan wrote. "The East Hartford Police Department and Emergency personnel were contacted and responded." 

The pool will remained closed during the investigation, Zito said.

"Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the student involved in this incident.  The school district is planning to provide grief counseling and support for students, faculty and staff," Zito said.

The student's name and age have not been released.
