A recount in Hartford and Tuesday gave Leo Canty a one-vote victory in the Democratic nomination for the 5th Assembly District.
The ballots had to be recounted after Canty and fellow Democrat, Brandon McGee ended up tied in the Aug. 14 primary. Each candidate received 774 votes on primary night. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill called for a recount to determine a winner.
The 5th Assembly District covers part of Hartford and part of Windsor.
The recount in Windsor took place Friday, and showed McGee received one vote fewer than had been counted on Primary Night.
The votes in Hartford were recounted Tuesday, and the totals remained the same as the original count Aug 14. That gave Canty a victory by a margin of one vote.
McGee asked election officials to look for what he called a missing ballot from the Windsor tally. He and his lawyer were considering whether to file a legal challenge to the results.
"We're missing a ballot for God's sake. So we either need to throw a ballot out, or we need to figure out on September 4th who is the winner," McGee said.

A tie would require a special election Sept. 4.
After the recount, Canty wasn't convinced the race was over.
"It's not the easiest thing that I've ever done in my life. I can think of a hundred places I'd rather be right now bu on the other hand, it's exciting."
