A 74-year-old Hartford man has serious injuries after he was hit by a car on Route 2 West in Colchester on Tuesday night.

State police said the driver fled the scene. Troopers responded to Route 2 West near exit 17 around 7:15 p.m.

State police said the victim was standing outside his vehicle when a driver in a dark blue Jeep Cherokee veered into the shoulder of the road and hit him. It has damage to the passenger side mirror and door handle.

State police said LifeStar flew the man to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

Town officials told NBC Connecticut that the man injured is a city clerk for the city of Hartford.

"We are saddened and shocked by the hit-and-run incident involving our City Clerk. Our thoughts are with him and with his family, and wish him a full and speedy recovery. We urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Colchester Police Department," city officials said in a statement.

The state police accident reconstruction team was called to investigate. The highway was briefly closed in the area and has since reopened.
