An Enfield man was killed in a crash that closed the northbound side of Route 9 North in Cromwell for hours Wednesday.

Police said 61-year-old Charles Guilmette was driving a tractor-trailer on Route 9 southbound around 6:45 a.m. Investigators said Guilmette’s vehicle went across the left lane, through the center median and into the northbound travel lanes, hitting a car driving the opposite direction. The truck then hit a guardrail along the right shoulder before stopping next to a tree.

Guilmette suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Hartford Hospital but is expected to recover. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and towed from the scene.

The northbound side of the highway was closed between exits 18 and 19 for hours and the backups extended for miles.

Traffic was heavy on Route 9 during much of the day, not only with commuters, but also with golf fans heading to the Travelers Championship in Cromwell.

The crash remains under investigation.
